What I Do and How I Do it

My inspiration comes from the beautiful landscape and culture of the Salish Sea and from what I like to call *the space between*; the unknowable which exists where the ocean meets the air, or ones hand meets another, the place where two disparate qualities blend.
The collograph is a form of intaglio printmaking, similar to etching. The process is conducive to creating highly embossed paper prints filled with texture. With collographs I am able to use a traditional printmaking technique in a modern experimental way. The process involves building up texture on a surface plate. The plate can be made of any flat surface, and the texture can be anything from bits off the forest floor to man made things such as keys or burlap. The plate is then sealed, inked up and run with paper through an etching press. Many of my pieces are collages made up of multiple bits of collographs cut up and sewn together.

Though collographs are my focus I also use other media in my art making including drawing, painting, lino cuts and papermaking.
